The Light reveals reality

Pure Light reveals who we are

Pure Light reveals who we are

The following is a guest Morning Devotion by my wife Lori. You’ll be instructed and inspired by what she learned recently from the Holy Spirit’s prompting. I certainly was.

The morning light was beaming between the blinds when my husband kissed me awake.  And I felt refreshed after a much-needed good night’s sleep.

Sunday mornings are typically busy with preparations for heading to church and this morning was no different.  Once up and going, I was enjoying the hot cup of coffee prepared just right for me by my sweetie.

I did the usual morning routine and then stood in the closet, trying to decide what to wear.

On this particular Sunday, we were making our first visit to a church and I wanted to look especially nice.

I had been waiting for the right occasion to wear a beautiful skirt recently passed on to me.  Like many of you, some of my nicest clothes are from others thoughtful enough to pass them on to me.

Standing in the dimly lit closet, I pulled out the lovely, knitted, beige-colored skirt with a wide checkered pattern.  I selected a black, sleeveless sweater that I thought went perfectly with it.

Second opinions are always helpful, so went to seek by husband’s.  He has a better eye for such things than do I and, believe it or not, he’s honest.  Better yet, he’s tactful about it.

“Looks really nice, honey,” he said as I stepped into the light of the kitchen.

Fantastic! All I need now is to pull it together with a few accessories.  Pearl earrings. Pearl necklace.  Cute pair of black heels.  Perfect!  Outfit complete and I’m ready to go.

I grabbed my purse and my Bible and we were out the door.  I had to squint a bit as we stepped outside into the bright sunshine.  It felt warm like a comfy blanket over my arms.

Then dismay set in.

Oh, no!” I exclaimed.

What I couldn’t see before was clearly evident now.  The sunlight revealed that the stripes of the checkered patterned skirt were not black but instead navy blue.

The sleeveless black sweater was a distinct contrast.

This, of course, would never do.

“Hold on, honey.  I’ve got to go change.” I shouted, as I ran toward the front door.

As we drove to church, I thought to myself, “How many times over the years have I learned this lesson of how variations in light either conceal or reveal reality?”

This was not the first time I have had this experience and likely won’t be the last.

You see, this probably happens to me more than I’d like to admit.  I’m actually referring to THE Light.
God’s Word reveals that, “God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.”

I can only imagine that because there is no darkness in God’s presence, because there are no shadows, all things in heaven are seen for what they truly are.

We don’t have to wait until we reach heaven, however, to see our lives and circumstances with more accurate perception.

We just have to get closer to Jesus and allow God’s Word to shine through us more often and more brightly.  As we become brighter lighthouses of love and truth, we’ll better recognize who around us is wearing the white hats and who is wearing the grey hats.

Every Christian has times when he or she slips away from the bright light of motivated faith.  It’s at such times that we don’t see that someone else’s deeds or thoughts are a bit gray rather than white with purity.

That someone might even be ourselves.

Too often, problems follow this lack of discernment.

Please, check your life and motives by seeking more of God’s Light within you.

Pray more often.

Worship more vibrantly.

Read scripture more frequently.

Serve people more fervently.

Associate with Light-seeking Christians more often.

That way, you don’t have to worry about being embarrassed by appearing clueless as to your spiritual appearance to others.

Lori Drummond

“If we claim to have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and he blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” (I John 1:6-7)
