I’m really glad that our status with God is not based on things that we can’t control such as how tall we are, how naturally pretty or handsome we are — or aren’t — or even on our family history.
Though such things often have a bearing on status with the world, it’s clear from the Bible that God has a different way of evaluating us.
Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill?
He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous,
And who speaks the truth from his heart and has no slander on his tongue,
Who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellowman,
Who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the Lord,
Who keeps his oath even when it hurts,
Who lends his money without usury and does not accept a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things will never be shaken. (Psalm 15:1-5)
Life is full of people who believe that a place in heaven is earned as it is in worldly settings — by elevating self above others who are less gifted, less connected, less experienced, less attractive or a mix of all of the above.
Ironically, those who base their eternal hopes on earthly competitive advantage will be the most disappointed.
Yes, it’s true that the list above is no substitute for confessing Christ with our words and baptism. We have to be spiritually reborn before we can begin living a new life. But once a person becomes a Christian, he or she is to live according to the simple pattern listed above.
It is a pattern that is not complicated, but it does require one to be committed.
Strive to always do what is righteous.
Always tell the truth.
Don’t gossip.
Don’t hassle your neighbors, either next door at home or in the next cubicle.
Don’t insult people.
Don’t condone — even just with giggles — the sinful lifestyles of others.
Don’t break your promises.
Don’t profit from loans to family and friends.
Don’t join schemes against innocent people in order to get more money or popularity.
Like I said, it doesn’t take a genius to know this stuff.
But it does take one filled with goodness in order to do this stuff.
Ask God to fill your soul with the Holy Spirit.
Do all you can to fill your mind with the Word of God.
Make sure, first of all, that your heart has received Jesus as Lord of all.
With Jesus in your heart, the Word in your mind and the Holy Spirit flooding your soul, you’ll be able to do the things above.
And you’ll have a faith that will never be shaken.
Wow, what a great promise!
For those of us enduring times of significant sifting, Psalm 15:1-5 is a lifesaver.
Live out these words, my friend.
God will love it.
And you’ll live forever.
As always, I love you
Martin
