No Christian should own the proverbial “wooden spoon.”

If you have one, it needs to be tossed.

I’m talking about the figurative spoon that is all too often used to stir the pot of divisiveness via gossip.

We all know that gossip is a tool of the devil.

And we all know that we’ve too often reached into his toolbox in order to twist events our way or to better plug ourselves into the cool crowd.

We surely weren’t doing things God’s way.

Even long-time Christians are not immune to this trap. All it takes is somebody pushing the right hot button in our emotions or passions. Next thing you know, we’ve “expressed our concerns” in a way that tears down others rather than building them up.

“Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends” (Proverbs 17:9).

There is nothing good that comes from gossip. That’s why we have no business blabbing to others about the offenses of people we know.

It’s SO much better to only say those things that build up others, just as we’re advised by Ephesians 4:29.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

Please look today for people who need verbal encouragement. Share words with them that will lift their spirits, not erode their standing with others.

And I’ll do the same.

It will take patience and a forgiving spirit and a realization that we’re all sinners striving to be more like saints.

But with Christ, all things are possible.

Even getting forever rid of wooden spoons.

As always, I love you
Martin
