We read a very saddening verse during our Bible study last night at SouthWinds Christian Church.

“There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.

“For whom am I toiling,” he asked, “and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”

“This too is meaningless — a miserable business!” (Ecclesiastes 4:8)

Those of us in the study agreed that we’d seen a number of people during our lives who demonstrated the emptiness described above.

I actually began to feel vicarious pain for people who have placed themselves in such positions.

No relationships to sustain him — or her.

No boundaries with when work stopped and enjoying contentment began.

No threshold of “enough” when it came to stuff.

The tragedy of thinking inner peace comes from external stuff or status is repeated over and over and over in our world.

People working long hours and standing in long shopping lines, so often with long faces.

Something is wrong with this miserable picture.

There’s a better way, of course.

it’s called the Way.

It’s the path that Jesus marked out for us.

And it’s described in a verse found in today’s reading from the One-Year Bible.

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If you love the world, love for the Father is not in you. For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful people, the lust of their eyes and their boasting about what they have and do—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” (I John 2:15-17)

Live to please God and bless other people, my friend.

Your life will have meaning. You’ll form all sorts of good relationships with spiritual siblings and spiritual children whom you’ve influenced toward salvation. And you’ll be content with your wealth stored up in heaven.

Sounds like a slam-dunk choice to me. Hope you feel the same.

As always, I love you
Martin
