A Genesis 24 story about the patriarch Isaac provides a powerful incentive for evening meditations.

Isaac’s mom Sarah had died, leaving a huge hole in his heart. Coincidentally, Isaac had not found a suitable bride in the Canannite land and so, his dad Abraham sent a trusted servant to where his extended family lived in order to find a young woman of comparable faith and culture.

Genesis 24 contains quite a bit of detail about what transpired and the reading is interesting.

Because of God’s providential hand, the servant did find the right girl — a gorgeous one at that — and returned to Isaac with this sovereign blessing.

I love how the Bible sets up the narrative of Isaac meeting Rebekah for the first time. I also love the emotionally flooded way the story concludes:

“He went out to the field one evening to meditate, and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching. Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?”

“He is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself.

“Then the servant told Isaac all he had done. Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.” (vv. 63-67).

As we commit to daily meditations, we can’t expect the Lord to meet DAILY the desires of our heart for a special relationship. Remember, prayer is not simply the dropping off of a shopping list at the grocery store of godly blessings.

What we can expect is that God will see our faith demonstrated in privately worshipping Him and in seeking to know more about Him and in laying before Him our intercessory concerns for others and those empty portions of our lives that can only be filled by Him.

When the time is right, God’s heart- and soul-satisfying blessing will show up.

And what greater way to magnify the blessing is there than when it comes to a heart expressing worship?

Isaac’s bride came to him while he worshipped.

Let’s each live in a meditative spirit, honoring the Lord every waking moment so that when a deeply desired blessing is eventually sent by God, we’ll be comforted and God will be praised.

As always, I love you
Martin
