When it comes to playing a game of tag in the school yard or back yard, you’d better be faster than the other kids or you’d better stay close to “base.”

You remember, of course, the relief of touching the tree or the jungle gym or the specified wall or wherever “base” had been established by the group of kids.

You didn’t want to be out of the game and so you made sure that you could reach base before the “it” kid tagged you.

As a child, my fast legs actually got me in trouble sometimes because I relied too much on speed and not enough on smarts.

Yes, I was always one of the last kids tagged, but I also allowed myself sometimes to get too far away from base.

When that happened, I found myself with no escape path to the base.

And so, I soon was a loser like everybody else.

I didn’t like it, but eventually and stubbornly learned the lesson that sooner or later, we’re going to encounter somebody faster than us or smarter than us or more persuasive than us.

That’s why we’re better off if we stay close to base when playing tag or when seeking to live a godly life.

We’ve all been tagged by the “it” of sin or failed decision-making regarding the practical decisions of life.

We’ve all been tagged by the “it” of despair.

It stunk when that happened.

We thought we were better at evading the “tag” than we actually were.

It’s important that we learn from such moments of overconfidence.

It’s important that we know where our base is, spiritually and emotionally.

I’m talking about the Lord, of course. I’m talking about His Word.

When we run to Him and take His hand as our base, the Enemy can’t tag us out of the game.

And we can call out to others running around wildly and exhort them to run to base before they’re tagged out of the game by the Enemy.

What should we say? Well, among our words of godly wisdom to share should be Proverbs 3:5-6 that tells us to trust in the Lord with all of our hearts, leaning not on our own understanding. In all of our ways, we should acknowledge Him and He will direct our paths.

Listen, the Lord is our refuge and our very present help in times of trouble.

As the One-Year Bible reading for today shows, we have a base that is absolutely secure.

“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10)

Running the race of faith should always mean staying close to the base of faith.

Run to God, my friend. It’s the safe place to be.

As always, I love you
Martin

You are welcome. I pray that you are also blessed today. Your note has provided encouragement to me. Please tell me about your congregation and how God uses you there. This information helps me to know how the Kingdom of God is growing, one changed life at a time.
