It’s one of the most vivid word pictures painted by Jesus during His ministry.

Jesus had entered the last week of His ministry with the heart-thumping triumphal entry into Jerusalem. So many were so excited about what they thought was the imminent end to Roman rule as their long-desired political/military messianic kingdom was being launched.

The people were so mistaken because they were blinded by earthly desire and pride.

They wanted to be the top dogs, so to speak, because of humiliation they had felt for generations at the hands of the Romans.

God also didn’t want them to feel humiliation yet, because they wouldn’t humble themselves under God’s call to humility and trust, they suffered and stewed and swallowed the lie that hate breeds hope.

Jesus came to bring them something better, but they didn’t want better.

They wanted bigger as in who carried the bigger stick and had the bigger say in how things were to operate in Israel.

Jesus had tried for several years to shepherd the Jews to a better view of life and faith.

Most rejected His teaching, though.

Here is how Jesus summed up their responses in Matthew 23:37 —

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.”

I praise God that a few of the Jews eventually did “get” that their only real hope for this life and the next was to find shelter in Jesus. That core of 120 believers who gathered in the weeks after His resurrection has grown to the hundreds of millions of Christians around the world today, including you and me.

Let’s embrace the message of Psalm 2:12 in today’s One-Year Bible reading and find peace for the rest of our lives here and forever in the next:

“Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.”

Enjoy your blessed life today, my friend. And please make sure to share your blessings with others who need a place of certain refuge.

As always, I love you
Martin
