One of the trends I’ve noticed with increasing frequency in the business world is the increasing use of life coaches.

From what I’ve observed, a life coach is essentially a mentor offering business skills advice or personal life advice at an hourly rate.

For this trend to have continued growing in recent years, there must be some measurable value that comes to the lives of those being coached.

The idea of mentoring in various areas of our lives is far from new, however.

Was Jesus not the ultimate life coach? Were not the lessons taught the most important ones that a human could learn?

As we enter a new year, we’ll be wise to accept life coaching from the greatest source of all — the Bible.

It’s clear that the scriptures were given to us for this very purpose.

In fact, the Apostle Paul wrote that if we’ll study the Word and correctly share what we learn, we’ll please God and help others (2 Timothy 2:15).

Solomon learned alot from the life coach given him for the first part of his life — his father King David.

David had a lot of wisdom and fruits of that wisdom correctly applied.

Yet David also had scars because of his choices to ignore God’s wisdom.

Solomon gained some scars of his own because of ignoring God’s wisdom and that’s why, I believe, he opened the Book of Proverbs by explaining why storing up God’s wisdom in our hearts is SO important:

“The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

“for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight;

“for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair;

“for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young—

“let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—

“for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.”

Listen, none of us wants to incur the painful and varied scars of poor choices that follow the ignoring of God’s wisdom. That’s why I encourage you to accept the daily life coaching from the Bible as you greet each day in 2012.

I was so pleased this morning when I saw that a longtime Christian friend Helen Dominguez told her Facebook friends that she promises to read through the One-Year Bible this year. She’ll make fewer poor choices this year and her family — and her faith — will be blessed as a result.

Please consider making the same choice, my friend.

Stars in your heavenly crown because of wise choices are much more valuable than scars in your life because of poor choices.

As always, I love you
Martin
